A simple idea well executed—Most designs that earn the mark of timelessness begin with this premise. The chino pant is no exception. Its clean look, easy-to-wear style and comfortable, durable cotton twill have made the chino a wardrobe staple for over 150 years.
19th century military heritage
The chino was originated by Sir Harry Lumsden, an English General stationed in Northern India who transformed his white issue pants using a dye blended from local botanicals to make them easier to wear and maintain on the dusty battlefields. We will never know for sure, but some say the mix was coffee, mulberry and curry powder. The resulting color was called khaki, the Urdu word for “dust.”
The benefit of blending into one’s surroundings caught on quickly. Chinos became the standard military uniform for England and later, the US. Along the way, the khaki pant took on the additional nickname, “chino,” due to the shipping labels on the crates carrying them to the Philippines, which read “Chino,” or China in Spanish.
Evolved for greater performance
We believe that all apparel, whether field gear or casual wear, should be built to support the frequent wear of an active man. That comes down to fit, construction, and features that add more usefulness to our apparel. We evolved the classic chino in each of these areas to make our Spartan Pant.
The cotton twill is 7 ounces per yard, a mid-weight fabric with a comfortable sanded finish. We articulated the knees and used a gusseted crotch to facilitate your movement, then reinforced both the knees and pocket clip area to extend the life of the pant. Sewn using triple needle stitching on both the in- and outseam, the Spartan Pant has the strength and durability that you expect from Triple Aught Design. To keep your gear handy, we placed D-rings on the front belt loops so that you can dummycord a pocket knife, small flashlight or keys while keeping them discretely concealed in the two front welt pockets.
The fit remains loose enough for comfort and movement, however the overall line is streamlined without excess bulk or drag. The result is that the Spartan Pant can take on your casual styles easily with a look that is modern yet classic.
Note: The Spartan pant is cut to shrink to its specified waist size after the first wash and dry. Please consult our fit chart for sizing guidance. Additionally, we now sell a hemmed or unhemmed version of the pant. If you prefer the unhemmed version, we recommend that you wash and dry the pants according to the care instructions prior to hemming.
